Most sound designers rely too heavily on sample libraries. This program teaches you to create unique sounds using synthesizers, so you're not limited by what's available commercially.
We start with subtractive synthesis in Vital because it's free and visual, making it easier to see what filters and envelopes actually do. Then move into FM synthesis with Operator, which is perfect for metallic, bell-like, and unusual textures. Finally, wavetable synthesis for evolving pads and complex tones.
Practical Applications
You'll design specific sounds: sci-fi UI beeps, creature vocalizations, impact sounds, ambient drones, and musical elements. Each assignment comes with reference audio from actual productions.
By week eight, you'll be able to hear a sound and know which synthesis method would recreate it most efficiently. The final exam is a blind challenge: recreate five provided sounds using only synthesis, no samples.
